Oscar Tully

Fire & Blood

Oscar Tully was a young Tully warrior whose battlefield reputation carried him from the Riverlands conflict into a new life as a sellsword captain. Knighted for his actions in the Muddy Mess, he became one of the three youths known collectively as the Lads, then financed and led the Stormbreakers on their voyage to Tyrosh and the Disputed Lands.

Identity and Background

Oscar was the younger brother of Kermit Tully, Lord of Riverrun and liege lord of the Riverlands. In 131 AC, when Kermit was nineteen and considered inexperienced, Oscar was younger still. He was also described as greener than his brother and possessed of the prickly pride often associated with second sons. The contrast between his youth and his emerging military reputation shaped his early standing among the riverlords.

The Muddy Mess and the Lads

Oscar killed three men during the Muddy Mess and was knighted on the battlefield afterward. The fight helped make him, his brother Kermit, and Benjicot Blackwood the recognized leaders of their young generation. Bound by battle, the three became so close that their men called them collectively the Lads. Oscar’s martial distinction thus belonged to a wider alliance: Kermit represented Tully authority, while Oscar’s battlefield achievement established him as a warrior in his own right.

The Stormbreakers

After Lord Cregan Stark stepped down as the King’s Hand, many Northmen faced the prospect of returning to a land in the grip of winter, where hardship awaited their families and communities. The collapse of the Triarchy created another possibility: the Three Daughters were hiring free companies, offering prospects of service abroad. Some Northmen chose to seek those fortunes rather than return north.

Two companies arose from that opportunity. The Wolf Pack consisted entirely of Northmen, while the Stormbreakers, financed and led by Oscar, drew men from every part of Westeros. The company connected Oscar’s leadership to a broader movement of men seeking employment across the narrow sea, rather than simply returning to the regions from which they had come.

Departure and Significance

As the great lords dispersed from King’s Landing after the coronation, Oscar set sail with the Stormbreakers for Tyrosh and the Disputed Lands. His departure marked a distinct turn from the Riverlands battles that had made his name: the young knight who had risen through the Muddy Mess now commanded a company assembled from across the realm. The evidence leaves his later career unstated, but establishes his move from battlefield prominence among the riverlords to leadership in a free company.
